Search for jet-ski hero who pulled fisherman from water

A MAN is searching for his mystery hero after he was rescued by a good Samaritan on a jet ski when a fishing trip went horribly wrong.

Jeff Berg had his fishing rods, tackle and esky ready but 200m from the Eimeo boat ramp a wave spilled over his 2.7m tinnie.

Within minutes he was in the water, holding on for dear life to his sinking boat.

“The tide was mad and I was moving inland at a rate of knots and the boat kept trying to flip upside down,” Mr Berg said.

“I realised I was in trouble when the boat rolled and I lost all my fishing rods.”

Mr Berg said he was out of breath, struggling to keep his boat upright.

“The life vest I bought, but wasn’t wearing, had floated away with the rest of my things.”

It was at that moment he started looking around for help and saw a man on a jet ski in the distance.

“I waved him down, although I think he was already heading my way,” Mr Berg said.

The mystery saviour dropped Mr Berg on the shore and went back to try to salvage the boat.

“I have to admit that at one point I figured they must have given up and gone home.

“But soon after that I saw the ski way off in the distance with the tinnie in tow.”

Mr Berg said the mystery man was driving the jet ski and had a friend in the boat, who was bailing water out with a bucket.

“The two of them had managed to save almost everything. I am so grateful,” he said.

Mr Berg lost sight of his mystery helper while thanking other people who came to his aid.

“I want to track that guy down and thank him personally, it is the least I can do,” he said. “I want to thank him; my wife Belinda wants to thank him, and I don’t know if he drinks but I would love to shout him a Scotch.

“I’ve done two Sydney to Hobart races and have been in waves taller than my house. I’ve been 200 miles offshore in 100kmh winds and at no time in my 41 years have I ever been that close to death.”
