NEWS State Government to consider extending trial ban on jet skis near beaches

THE State Government will consider imposing jet ski bans along Adelaide’s coast and creating a dedicated jet ski zone in a bid to keep beaches safe.

Safety officers have begun patrolling Grange and Henley beaches to ensure jet ski riders are adhering to a trial ban prohibiting the use of motorised vessels within 200m of the shoreline.

Anyone breaking the new rules face fines of up to $750.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said if the trial was successful it would be introduced to other beaches.

“The Government has delivered that ban as a trial. I’d like to see it permanent but we will first await the outcome of the trial. Once the trial is complete, the Government will be making further announcements,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“I ask local residents along other beaches if they have concerns about jet skis, to please contact the State Government, to please contact my office and let me know if you want to partake in this sort of trial.

“The last thing you want to see at the beach are jet skis interrupting or making children unsafe in the water.”

Labor Member for Colton Paul Caica said he had been pressing the Government to introduce such a ban for about 10 years.

“What residents have found is that jet skis are not only a danger but they are intrusive, a bit like having a motorcycle park out the front of your house,” he said. “It’s something the residents have asked for for the past decade.

“Only through Mr Koutsantonis’ efforts are we now putting that in place. Without doubt, it’s the largest (complaint) file I’ve got over the past 10 years.

“On the best beach days, we see a multitude of jet skis that are going very quickly, that are going quickly among swimmers and indeed it’s a safety issue but it’s also an amenity issue.

“Hundreds of thousands of people attend this beach and this coastline every year and they deserve to have a bit of tranquillity and indeed safety when they attend the beach.”

Mr Caica said there had been “some positive discussions with the responsible group of jet skiers, their peak organisation, to look at areas that might be dedicated for the use of jet skis”.

“Now that’s a matter I think will be subject to further discussion,” he said.

The trial ban will end on Australia Day, January 26, but the exclusion zone at Henley and Grange will be in place until at least March 31 or beyond, if the Government decides to make it a permanent arrangement.
