Victorian boaties, jet skiers face drug tests

BOAT and jet ski users will be tested for drugs such as ice, ecstasy and cannabis for the first time under new police powers starting tomorrow.

A zero blood alcohol limit will also apply to watercraft operators under the age of 21 as the Government moves to improve safety on the water as summer kicks off.

Fines will be lifted for not wearing a lifejacket and operating unregistered and unseaworthy vessels under the measures launched by Premier Ted Baillieu this morning.

“While drug testing has been commonplace on Victoria’s roads, Victoria Police have not had the power until now to administer preliminary drug tests on the water,” Mr Baillieu said.

“This will be a primary focus for the Victoria Police summer water campaign, as well as other types of behaviour that can lead to tragedy – speed, poor preparation and impaired or unauthorised operation of vessels.”

The measures will be accompanied by bolstered police patrols over summer as Victorians flock to the beach.

Minister for Ports Denis Napthine said drowning deaths had halved since wearing lifejackets became compulsory in 2005, but some boaters were still not wearing them and risking their lives.

“By making sure we comply with these simple precautions we can greatly improve our marine safety outcomes,” Dr Napthine said.

There are about 200 serious incidents and 500 calls for help on Victorian waters each year.
