Joseph Scaturchio died at the Gold Coast during the Australian Watercross Championships.

Joseph Scaturchio, 22, died after his jet ski crashed into other riders during one of the last rounds of the Australian Watercross National Championships.

His father, Tony Scaturchio, who is also the president of the Victorian Jet Sport Boating Association, said Joseph was the “perfect son”.

“We still don’t believe it happened,” Mr Scaturchio told the Herald Sun this morning.

“We all know the risks but don’t think its going to happen but now it has.

“We’re not at that point in time where we want to say what happened or what might’ve happened, it’s just one of those things that shouldn’t have happened but did.”

Mr Scaturchio was competing in the professional rounds of the event when he crashed about 2.30pm. Paramedics treated him at the scene but he could not be revived.

The end of the event was cancelled following the incident.

Mr Scaturchio said while the tragedy came out of a racing incident, it should be a message for recreational users to obey the law.

“We’re pretty keen jet-skiers, and I know the media hype has gone round with recent incidences but you can’t relate this to what happens on the public waters. But, I do stress that everyone obey the rules of the water. They’re there for a reason and as long as everyone abides by those laws then we shouldn’t have any incidents on the water that result in people’s injuries or death,” he said.

“When people don’t obey them to the utmost then incidents will happen.”

Mr Scaturchio, who’s younger son Simon, 17, also jet-skis, said Joseph started in the sport young before competing internationally.

He said Joseph was competing in a race in 2009 when a similar tragedy happened.

“I’m not saying he cheated death but the accident happened behind him and the fellow was struck and died in his race,” he said.

Mr Scaturchio said he was touched by the tributes flowing in on social media.

Online tributes said Joseph’s life was one of “amazing moments”.

Shawn Alladio from K38 International expressed his grief to the family, friends and racing community.

“Joey’s enthusiasm and spirit are a great contribution to our PWC community and we are deeply touched for all he did to bring up the level of competition for the sport that he and his family love so much. We thank you Joey for being on the line with us,” Mr Alladio said on social media.

One friend said Joseph would never be forgotten.

“It was a privilege growing up with you, the laughs we had will never be forgotten. I can’t believe it was only last week you were here with us and we were making jokes about the nonni,” the friend said on Facebook.

“RIP Joey you will be missed by many i love u so much i hope you lived an amazing 22 years your always going to be my brother your always going to be in my heart your in a safe place now rest in peace Xoxoxo,” said another on a tribute site.

Australian Jet Sport Boating Association secretary Mandy Brown said it was the worst day of their lives.

“Everyone’s just incredibly shocked,” she told the Courier Mail.

“Joseph was a magnificent young man and a very accomplished rider who had won many races, including overseas. He’ll be sorely missed.”

AUSTRALIA’S watersports community is mourning the loss of one of its most talented following the death of a 22-year-old jet-ski rider at the Watercross Nationals at The Spit yesterday.

Victorian competitor Joseph Scaturchio was coming into an early corner of a race at Marine Stadium when a collision occurred between three of the five competing machines.

Scaturchio was pulled from the water unconscious and paramedics spent up to 20 minutes trying to revive him.

Police divers are today searching the area.

Race organiser James Berger said Scaturchio had been competing on a runabout jet-ski during the third of four finals in the prostock class when the incident occurred.

“A serious injury was taken by a professional-level rider that has resulted in the fatality of that rider,” he said.

“Initial investigations have shown that it was a racing incident and nobody is at fault.”

The Australian Jet Sports Boating Association (AJSBA) posted a tribute on its website.

“Our very close-knit Personal watercraft racing community has suffered a tragic loss today during a race incident at the Australian titles,” the AJSBA committee member wrote.

“For many of us, it has been the worst day of our lives. Please respect the families wishes during this tragic time.”

Mr Berger broke down as he commended the K38 Water Safety Australia crew who brought Scaturchio to shore, saying he had never seen anybody move so quick.

“I have never seen a rider recovered from the water so fast,” he said.

“They had him (Scaturchio) on that rescue board in a matter of seconds.”

Spectator Joe Murphy watched the incident unfold and said it was immediately obvious something had gone wrong.

“You could tell something had gone wrong because all of the other competitors pulled back,” he said.

“They (rescuers) grabbed him by the vest and put him on the back board of their ski and brought him into the rescue tent.”

Mr Murphy said it was difficult to see what had caused the machines to collide due to the spray caused by the jet-skis.

“There were so many skis heading for that one corner so it’s hard to say whether he got hit by a ski or if he came off and then got hit by another ski,” he said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Austin said it was unclear what had caused the incident that led to Scaturchio’s death.

“I believe he did suffer some kind of head injury but to say how the accident occurred is difficult due to the amount of spray involved,” he said.

The incident marks the second death at an Australian titles event on the Gold Coast this year following the death of Matthew Barclay at the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles last month.

Sen-Sgt Austin said there were always risks involved in marine sports and that investigations would continue.

Vote NO in the poll to set speed limits (scroll to bottom of article):

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/jetskis-highspeed-missiles-in-need-of-brakes-say-police-20120417-1x5kz.html#poll

SPEED limits should be imposed on jet-skis with Victoria’s top water cop describing them as ”high-speed missiles” capable of travelling at more than 100km/h.

The increasing power and numbers of jet-skis meant a speed limit for jet-skis was needed, Acting Inspector Steve Towers from the water police told The Age.

”They are a high-speed missile weighing 400 kilograms, they would absolutely take someone else’s head off in a collision, they would cause a severe amount of damage if they collided with another ski or a boat,” he said.

While personal water craft are restricted to 9km/h within 200 metres of shore and within 50 metres of a swimmer, there are no speed limits beyond.

”Unfortunately, once you are out off the 200-metre-mark there’s no rules in regard to speed limit,” Inspector Towers said.

He said marine legislation was aimed at large vessels and fishing boats, not jet-skis.

”The perception of the public whenever they see jet-skis is they are always going fast, they are always going flat out,” he said. ”Some do about 110 km/h, depending on the conditions … so they are very fast and they are about 400 kilograms.”

He said jet-skis had a limited braking ability.

”There has definitely got to be some form of cap [on speed],” he said. ”We have two laser radars here that measure in knots, so you would have to be put some speed measure in knots to cover all other vessels, and say, righto, the speed limit’s 50 knots [92km/h].”

A sweep by water police on Saturday from Port Melbourne to Patterson River detected only seven jet-skis with no infringements issued.

Police are still investigating the death of a swimmer struck by a jet-ski off Port Melbourne in February.

Inspector Towers said there had been an improvement in the behaviour of jet-ski operators since anti-hooning laws were introduced allowing police to impound personal water craft. But he said more work had to be done educating jet-ski users with some riders unaware they were not permitted in no-boating areas.

Martin Foley, the member for Albert Park, called for compulsory third party insurance for jet-skis – a move the Baillieu government has rejected.

Mr Foley would like to see the distance jet-skis are allowed to operate at speed pushed out to 400 metres from shore.”These are big powerful machines and if anything I am glad Victoria Police see the need for tougher regulation,” he said.

The Sunshine Coast Jet Sport Club Inc would like to present a unique Sponsorship opportunity.

We have created a two day, action-packed Jet Ski event that will see both National and International riders compete at Mudjimba Beach, in the heart of the Sunshine Coast Queensland. This year will be the second running of this event following huge success last year. We are looking to build the event further and we have already received Maritime Safety Queensland and Sunshine Coast Regional Council approvals. The event will be held over the Queen’s birthday weekend, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of June.

2012 Surf Slam consists of the:
2012 Krash Industries Australian Freestyle Championship 9th June 2012 (Saturday)
2012 PWC Australian MotoSurf Championships 9th June 2012 (Saturday)
Qld Rip ‘n’ Ride 10th June 2012 (Sunday)

Saturday will be an action-packed competition with the Krash Industries Australian Freestyle Championship and the PWC MotoSurf Championships. The PWC MotoSurf Championships will see riders come from throughout Australia come to compete at the highest level of Jet Ski racing in the nation. They will focus their efforts to get their hands on the exclusive trophy, and be named as the Australian #1 Surf Rider for 2012.

Sunday will be more of a social event with the Qld Rip n’’ Ride.
In its fifth year of success, the Rip ‘n’ Ride has expanded to be held in three states throughout the year. This is an opportunity for beginners and professional riders to ride together and for spectators to view the latest, greatest and never before attempted aerial tricks at the sport’s peak.

Following the conclusion of the Sunday Rip n Ride event, there will be a trophy presentation & PWC Stunt Show by international-class rider Jon Cooke, known for his performance in SeaWorld’s ski show. The prize giving will be held at the International award winning Novotel Twin Waters Resort.

With the who’s who of local and international riders combined and the newest faces to the sport, this will be a standalone event on the Australian jet-ski calendar. It offers the opportunity to both riders and spectators to see a combination of disciplines (freestyle & surf racing).

Our club is a non-profit organisation which aims to promote the fun and responsible use of personal watercraft in a safe environment. The sport has gained substantial interest in the past few years and is yet to reach its peak in attracting spectators.

To host these great events we need to raise funds…this is where you can help!

We would appreciate your help in any of the following ways:

1. Financial Sponsorship: Naming rights for the event (prime position in all the advertising, media, including pre & post event and inclulsion in the video which has been commissioned, significant promotion by commentator & competitors on the day, prime position for marketing flags, tents etc at the event)

2. Financial Sponsorship: Feature in most pre & post media, promotion by commentator as well as 2nd best positioning for flags, promotional banners etc at the event)

3. Donation of prizes: we are hoping to have many great prizes for our competitors

4. Donation of your products: again as giveaways to competitors

5. On site Promotions: giveaways, signage, flags etc.

Below is the format for each discipline:

Krash Industries Australian Freestyle Championship

One-on-one heats displaying rider’s best tricks. This will be judged via a knock out system similar to surfing, and followed by semis and finals.

3 x rounds of 10 lap races for each race class
> Pro/Amateur Ski Open
> Pro/Amateur Runabout Open

Qld Rip ‘n’ Ride

The riders can opt to take part in scheduled events throughout the day such as:

> Clinic – Professional riders teaching the skills to perform new manoeuvres.
> Open Freeride- sessions for people who want to try the skills they have been taught
without entering a competition format.
> Cherry Popper – for riders to attempt their first aerial backflip.
> Biggest Air – the highest jump from a wave

Please consider this as a great opportunity to reach a new audience on the Sunshine Coast and Australia wide and to promote our sport. In return we WILL ensure our members support the businesses that support us.

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated by members of our club, riders on the day and spectators for your contribution to both the event itself, and the sport in general.

We will be seeking media coverage from the following outlets:

This will allow us to start a combined promotion for the event with your business as a sponsor. We will be advertising the event at the Australian Flat Water titles to be held on the Gold Coast in late April.

We look forward to your reply and can’t wait to discuss sponsorship opportunities.
